Stun Guns vs. Tasers: What You Need to Know
May 22, 2009
When deciding on what type of self-defense product you need to feel secure, it’s important to know the facts about the devices you’re looking at. For most people, choosing a stun gun or a taser can prove to be an effective option, but what are the differences between the two? Here’s what you need to know about stun guns and tasers:
Stun Guns
Stun guns are small, electronic devices that send an electrical shock through your attacker, causing pain and muscle lock. Available in many different sizes, shapes, and styles, stun guns offer close encounter protection. While they are much more portable and easy to use, stun guns have a down side: they only work when placed in direct contact with your attacker. This could put you at risk for having your stun gun turned on you during a struggle. Not to mention, their effects aren’t as long as other methods like pepper spray. However, they are very affordable and still offer at least 50,000 volts of protection.
Tasers
Tasers have been used by law enforcement officers for many years now to subdue unruly suspects. These devices work by shooting two barbed probes up to 15 feet to deliver a powerful 30-second, 50,000 volt shock, giving you enough time to run away or to seek out help in an attack. Though effective, they are much more expensive than stun guns and only offer you that protection during the shock. Once it’s over, your attacker could recover.
